You can spend a lot of money on a miter saw. But in my opinion, a lot of what you're paying for with those more expensive ones, is gimmicks. Other saws have micro-fine adjustment knobs, which is just plain dumb engineering but brilliant marketing. The slop in the hinge on any saw, the wobble in the blade, the wear on the teeth, and especially your tape measure will completely negate the accuracy that those other saws pretend to achieve. By contrast, skil's compound saws are all business. They don't pretend to be made for NASA, and after all, this wood we're cutting, not titanium alloy. It's smooth, reliable, well made with a thick aluminum base, solid components, and it's not an ounce more complex than a woodworking tool SHOULD be. I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend this terrific tool. Don't waste money on more expensive saws, and instead get yourself a good quality blade! You'll be very happy you did.

I did a lot of searching on the internet and finally came back to Skil for a very good price/performance power tool product. I was able to get the miter saw going after only about 30 mins of setup, and a check of all key measurements indicated that no adjustments were needed. I did some preliminary miter cuts to test the saw and everything works great. And the laser is a great advantage, at least for a novice hobbiest like me. For the money this is a great saw. I am happy I went with Skil and chose a 12 " over the 10" saw size. I am now using this saw to cut 4" dia. pine branches for .5" thick slices that can be used for drink coasters. This is a very versatile tool. I will also be making 45 degree miter cuts for picture framing. The saw cuts true in all tests I have done.

I bought this saw with the intention of using it for both wood and metal so that I would not need to spend the money and space on 2 separate saws. Besides going through wood as expected, my estimations were correct and it can also cut aluminum very well, even with the blade it comes with. The motor bogging down along with heat and sparks from cutting metal were a concern for me, which is why I opted for this saw since it has an aluminum construction, is durable enough to handle more than just wood dust, has a strong motor and uses a 12" blade. Using the included blade it makes VERY clean cuts on 6061 aluminum with no sign of any stress on the saw or blade. I have also used an abrasive blade to cut metal and it works, however watch out for the metal getting hot enough to melt the plastic strip where the blade goes beneath the surface during a cut; I managed to melt mine once during an aggressive cut through a 1" steel bar. I plan on getting a steel cutting blade because of this since abrasive cut-off blades generate too much heat while cutting hard metals for this saw.
Positives:
Powerful motor, aluminum construction, easy blade removal, smooth saw head motion, light weight, cannot tip over, clean cuts, easy angle adjustment when mitering, table extensions, can cut metal, deep cuts are possible, decent laser, the motor brake does its job, dust collector is particularly suited for collecting metal shavings, safety button for blade operation.
Negatives:
Dust collector falls off easily, built in clamps are flimsy and almost impossible to tighten, very loud, cannot take very thick blades, plastic piece around blade contact point can melt.
Unless you are very serious about wood/metal working and have some money to burn, this saw is an excellent choice.
